In other words, side configuration diving gives you options for versatility and hydrodynamics. Also, you don’t have to walk with heavy bottles on your back.
In fact, all you have to do is get in the water, attach the bottles to your equipment and start diving.

If you are a certified PADI Open Water Diver and are at least 15 years old, you can register for this PADI specialty.
If you are a certified PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver and are at least 15 years old, you can enroll in the PADI Sidemount Diver course.
In addition to learning the many benefits of diving with a side tank configuration, during one confined water dive and three open water dives you will learn to:
- Properly assemble and configure scuba equipment in the side configuration of scuba tanks.
- Distribute your weight system and mounted equipment sideways so that they are perfectly balanced in the water.
- Manage gas by alternating second stages, as planned, if carrying two cylinders.
- Respond correctly to potential problems when diving sideways.

The first dive of this PADI Specialty can be validated as an Adventure Dive for your Advanced Open Water Diver certification.
